Changes To Family Friendly Rights

The Government published in February 2013 the Children and Families Bill which will be of interest to both employers and employees, particularly prospective parents. Most significantly, the Bill introduces shared parental leave allowing the child care responsibilities during the maternity leave period to be shared. The Bill also provides the right for all employees to request a flexible working arrangement.
What can a worker do where they are placed in a redundancy pool, scored alongside their team-mates and selected for dismissal but the employer refuses to disclose the evidence and rationale on which the scores were based?

Contractual Status of Employee Handbooks

The recent decision in Allen & Ors v TRW Systems Ltd from the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) has provided guidance on the status of a statement in an employee handbook which makes provision for enhanced redundancy payments. The case concerned an employer, TRW, who had agreed that an enhanced package would be paid to employees beyond the statutory minimum in the event of redundancy. This agreement was formalised in a redundancy policy document which was available on demand from HR.
