Young v (1) McLeod and (2) John McLeod & Co [1995] IT/5271/95

At short notice, Ms Young, a legal secretary employed by a recruitment agency, was assigned to work temporarily at a firm of Bradford-based solicitors, John MacLeod & Co. When she made a five-minute personal local call, she was told by the firm's senior partner, John MacLeod, that she should not make personal calls and that he expected her to pay for it. When she tried to explain, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Mr MacLeod remonstrated with her and threatened not to pay her. He then began to abuse her, repeatedly calling her a "slag" and assaulting her by grabbing hold of her hair. Her glasses were broken in the incident and she was considerably upset. She complained both to the police, who took no action, and to an industrial tribunal.
